Amid Mariupol horror in Ukraine, a newborn rests in her mother's arms

Mstyslav Chernov 13:25, Mar 12 2022..Newborn Veronika curled against her mother’s side on Friday, as if to hide from the horror around them – the war that tore apart the Mariupol maternity hospital where she was meant to greet the world.

On the eve of giving birth, her mother, Mariana Vishegirskaya, had to flee the hospital when a Russian airstrike hit. Her brow and cheek bloodied, she clutched her belongings in a plastic bag as she navigated down the hospital's debris-strewn stairs in her polka dot pyjamas on Wednesday.

Images of the desperate mothers and medical workers from the Children's and Women's Health hospital shocked the world, as the bombing took Russia’s war against Ukraine to a sickening new level. Taken to another hospital, Vishegirskaya and another woman who escaped the bombing have since given birth. Click here stuff-news

Up to 40% of Wellington council teams off sick, services slashed

12/03/2022..Wet weather, wind, and waves: Eastern North Island faces 'significant rainfall'. Guatemala receives first arrivals of Ukrainians fleeing conflict. Wellington City Council has been forced to limit and halt services such as roading and recycling, as Covid-19 sweeps through its workforce and contractors.

Council head of infrastructure Siobhan Procter said the council has been forced to focus on urgent reactive maintenance only. About 40 percent of its usual roading contractors are unavailable because of Covid-19.

So if there's safety issues on the transport corridor we're addressing those first, but there is going to be a flow on impact to projects. Wellington Water we know they're 30 percent down in terms of their construction staff there, so we put a few of their renewal projects on hold as well.. Click here RNZ news

Aus-Ukrainians safe in Sydney after ordeal

Liz Hobday 12/03/2022...A Ukrainian family with a nine-month-old baby has found safe haven in Australia after a dangerous three-week journey that saw them barred from boarding a flight to Sydney.

Iryna Zaiets fled Ukraine with her mother Olena Kuzmych and nine-month-old baby Oksana when the Russian invasion began on February 24. Ms Zaiets' sister Olha Lyeskakova cried as she met them at Sydney Airport on Saturday, embracing her sister and mother, and seeing her baby niece Oksana for the first time.

"I have done for Oksana more than I have done for anyone in my life before these last two weeks," she told AAP. The family had escaped to Poland and secured visas and flights to Sydney, but when they went to board a flight at the start of March, they were not allowed to board, because Oksana did not have any travel documents. Google adapts NZ earthquake alert system to help Ukraine refugees

Mike Kilpatrick 11/03/2022...Google is adapting its early warning earthquake system used in New Zealand to alert Ukrainians to air raids, the company has said. The system has been in place here since May last year and in October alerted Kiwis with Android phones of the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that shook the lower North Island.

Tragically, millions of people in Ukraine now rely on air strike alerts to try to get to safety," the company wrote on its blog. At the request, and with the help, of the government of Ukraine, we've started rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine.

This work is supplemental to the country's existing air raid alert systems, and based on alerts already being delivered by the Ukrainian government. Thankfully, the company already had something it could adapt for such purposes. Click here News-hub

Alternative community 'dream' sours as eviction battle heats up

Amy Ridout 05:00, Mar 12 2022...A man fighting to stay in an alternative community in Golden Bay says he's a legitimate tenant, and his young family will be forced to live in his car if he's evicted. Joseph Angelo is taking his dispute to the High Court after failing to prove his status as a tenant at the Tenancy Tribunal and Nelson District Court.

However, trustees of the land where Angelo resides say he's a “vexatious litigant”, who illegally moved into a house and trespassed its owner while the man was in a hospice. Courts have also effectively deemed him a squatter, with a Tenancy Tribunal ruling saying he had no legal right to possession” at the Golden Bay property.

The author, Ursus Schwarz, who died in November, called for people to live and work in the community, living a “biodynamic lifestyle” on the land. Accommodations and meals are FREE in exchange for 4 hours work per day on our interesting projects,” the advertisement said. Click here Stuff-news

Where to eat Bluff oysters this season

NZ Herald 10 Mar, 2022 05:21 AM..Fanfare generally accompanies the opening of the annual Bluff oyster season on March 1. Deservedly so - although we eagerly anticipate the arrival of asparagus, strawberries, and watermelon, there aren't many truly seasonal proteins. In the case of the Bluff species, the season is regulated.

Soul Bar & Bistro in Auckland is famous for its all-you-can-eat Bluff oyster lunch that celebrates the opening of the season, but the establishment has been closed temporarily due to Covid-related staff shortages so that highly anticipated event is off the cards for now.

Chef Ben Bayly of Arrowtown's Aosta and its newborn sibling Little Aosta is deeply passionate about our country's food producers, none more so than the brave folk who fish Bluffs. Bayly sources his Bluffs from Marina Oysters and Fish. Click here NZ-herald news

Kiwi Ko withdraws from Saudi title defence, after positive COVID-19 test

Grant Chapman 13/03/2022...Kiwi golf star Lydia Ko will not defend her title at next week's Saudi Ladies International tournament, after testing positive for COVID-19. Ko, 24, dominated last year's event in October, winning by five strokes from Thai Atthaya Thitikul to record her sixth victory on the Ladies European Tour.

But tournament organisers have announced she won't be in the field this time, after her positive test. Our 2021 champion Lydia Ko has had to withdraw from the 2022 Aramco Saudi Ladies International next week, after testing positive for COVID-19," the tournament Twitter account says.

Ko began her 2022 campaign strongly, notching up her 17th LPGA Tour victory at Gainbridge in January, and led late in the opening round of the Women's Championship at Singapore this month, before double-bogeying the 18th hole and fading to a tie for 23rd overall. Click here News-hub

US actor Jussie Smollett sentenced to 150 days in jail over fake attack

Don Babwin and Kathleen Foody 22:22, Mar 11 2022..A judge has sentenced Jussie Smollett to 150 days in jail, branding the Black and gay actor a narcissistic charlatan for staging a hate crime against himself to grab the limelight while the US struggled with wrenching issues of racial injustice.

The sentence and Smollett’s post-hearing outburst capped an hours-long hearing Thursday (local time) and more than three years of legal drama following Smollett's claim that he had been the target of a racist and homophobic attack.

Smollett didn't make a statement when offered the opportunity before the judge announced the sentence, saying he was listening to his attorneys' advice. But after Cook County Judge James Linn issued his decision, Smollett removed the face mask he wore throughout the hearing to proclaim himself innocent. Click here Stuff-news

Paralympics-Ice hockey-China's rapid rise culminates in historic bronze at Beijing Games

By Dhruv Munjal 13/03/2022...BEIJING (Reuters) - China have won a raft of medals at the Beijing Winter Paralympics but a bronze in ice hockey, which they achieved by beating South Korea on Saturday, could end up being the most memorable simply due to their lack of pedigree in the sport.

The hosts did not have a para ice hockey team until just over five years ago and the crushing 4-0 win over South Korea confirmed their arrival as one of the sport's new powers amid euphoric scenes at the capital's National Indoor Stadium.

We formed the team in 2016 and we've basically been training behind closed doors since," said forward Wang Zhidong. We didn't go home for about three years -- all because we were chasing this dream. To be able to achieve this result today, we're all very emotional and happy. China's rise has been masterminded by Russian coach Nikolay Sharshukov Click here Reuter

Biggest annual food price increase in over a decade adds to cost of living crisis

Mark Longley 11/03/2022...Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern may not think it is a crisis but the cost of living for most Kiwis took another hit after annual food prices rose a whopping 6.8 percent in February. The results, released by Stats New Zealand on Friday, were the largest annual increase since July 2011 and are going to make managing the household budget harder for a lot of Kiwis.

Fruit and vegetables led the onslaught on Kiwi's wallets rising 17 percent. Fruit and vegetables were the largest contributor to the annual movement, mainly influenced by tomatoes, broccoli, and iceberg lettuce,” Stats New Zealand food prices lead analyst Angus Crowe said.

Grocery food prices rose by 5.4 percent, restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased by 5.2 percent, meat, poultry, and fish prices increased by 7.1 percent and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased by 2.3 percent. Click here News-hub

Failures, racism at University of Otago laid bare

12/03/2022...University of Otago's new vice-chancellor is demanding "transformational change" after a scathing review found systematic racism, discrimination and bullying was a part of the culture across the institution.

In a letter to all university staff, Prof David Murdoch promised creating change would be his "highest priority" following the brutal review of allegations of racism at the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences. Prof Murdoch said the review was set up in response to staff members raising serious concerns with senior leadership during last year.

Heretaunga Tamatea Settlement Trust chief executive and former University of Canterbury assistant Maori, Pacific and equity vice-chancellor Dr Darryn Russell's review upheld the allegations. It said there was evidence of "racism, discrimination, and bullying being entrenched in a culture described as toxic" at the PE school. Click here RNZ news

Kāinga Ora spent over $24m of taxpayer money in four years on its own office renovations

Amelia Wade 13/03/2022...Despite thousands of state homes not meeting healthy homes standards, Newshub can reveal Kāinga Ora's spent millions doing up its own offices. While Housing Minister Megan Woods says that's a good thing because it means the agency is growing, National doesn't agree.

Kāinga Ora's spent $24,354,759 of taxpayer money over the past four years on itself on office renovation. The biggest spend ups were in the last financial year: $230,661 went on signs. $829,797 on a complete fit-out and renovation in Christchurch. $5.5 million for a complete fit-out of the Newmarket offices. $12 million on a total renovation of its Wellington headquarters.

I think New Zealanders will struggle to see why this Government is prioritising multi-million-dollar upgrades for swanky new offices," says National's housing spokesperson Nicola Willis. But when asked how bad the millions of dollars on office upgrades looks,Click here Click here News-hub.
