Song Review: Pop Icon Kylie Minogue Wants to "Say Something" About Releasing 'Disco' Album in the Social Distancing Era

We shouldn't even be moving on to another Kylie Minogue album era until the underrated, country-inspired Golden finds a deserved, wider audience. There's still time for "Sincerely Yours" and "Live A Little" to shine!

Unfortunately, the pop world works in mysterious ways.

With the recent announcement of her fifteenth studio album Disco set for release in November, Minogue kickstarts the project promotion by sharing its "Say Something" lead single. While included on a supposedly disco-inspired record, the first taste comes off as more of a synth-pop affair supported by prominent funk guitar.

As the world continues to deal with the distance and loneliness created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Minogue chooses to remain optimistic on "Say Something". The artist sings of tirelessly searching the galaxy for that special someone we know is out there for us all. Unfortunately, the search feels like a journey of a few thousand miles amidst stay-at-home measures.

From the twang of her previous album, the message of Minogue's latest release pairs well with the drastic switch to a euphoric, dancefloor fantasy created by her quest for love. The guitar and accompanying keyboard aid with the creation of butterflies in one's stomach and getting lost in their own fevered daydreams.

"Oh, we're just, just tryna find ourselves in the storms we chase, baby, in and out of summer, we could find our way," Minogue delicately sings on the second verse.

While it's a welcomed treat to hear the Australian pop icon wrap herself in infectious pop production once again, "Say Something" does not hit every mark you would want a lead single to hit. Following the poetic second verse, cliché songwriting overcomes the effort to the point of unnecessary repetition.

That's all to say, while the effort certainly wets the palate and serves as a commendable teaser to a highly anticipated album... it might fall a bit flat in terms of maximizing excitement and opportunity.

A music video for "Say Something", directed by Sophie Muller, will be out next month.
