Bella Thorne might not have walked the red carpet at the Golden Globe awards on Sunday night, but she let her voice be heard that sexual assault and harassment will not be tolerated. Hours before the show, the 20-year-old actress opened up about her own sexual abuse story, while declaring her support for the Time’s Up movement.
Thorne revealed that she was sexually and physically abused from as early as she can remember. The abuse stopped after she turned 14 years old when she locked and sat by her door, so whoever was assaulting her couldn’t enter. “I was sexually abused and physically growing up from the day I can remember till I was 14..when I finally had the courage to lock my door at night and sit by it,” she wrote in an emotional Instagram post.
Though Thorne expected in fear that the abuse would continue, it eventually stopped. She reminded her followers that not everyone is so fortunate and that sexual abuse can often lead to death for many people. “All damn night. Waiting for someone to take advantage of my life again. Over and over I waited for it to stop and finally it did,” Thorne wrote. “But some of us aren’t as lucky to get out alive. Please today stand up for every soul Mistreated. #timesup.”

Thorne’s post joined dozens of women who wore black to the Golden Globes as part of the Time’s Up movement, a protest against the longstanding sexism and sexual harassment in Hollywood. The movement also called for the end of sexism and sexual harassment in the workplace worldwide.
