After speaking with viral-sensation, and total hunky heartthrob, Steve Grand in Austin, TX during Pride Week this past September, it was clear "All-American Boy", his buzzworthy debut single, was only the beginning for the talented and honest musician. Soon after our quick chat, he released the polished music video in support of his second single "Stay" and is currently working on his full length debut album, set to come out this May.
Before All-American Boy is released this summer, Grand needs a little help with getting the anticipated project off the ground. So as does every independent artist who needs no record label trying to alter their sound or message, he has started a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of reaching his $81,000 pledge (Update: the Kickstarter goal was met in only 17 hours, with the final number of $326,593 donated, four times what he was asking), contributed by his devoted following of fans.
"Recording and producing an album can be an expensive undertaking. Record companies often spend hundreds of thousands of dollars—millions for the bigger artists—producing and promoting an album. My goal is $81,000. That will allow me just enough to finish my record, create album art, package it, and film my next music video, which I plan to release on the same day as the album. If we can raise this money together, you can count on my album being out sometime in May. And then I’ll see you on tour!", Grand says.
To promote the start of his fundraising campaign, Grand has also shared his latest third original single, "Back to California", along with another touching music video. The new song seems to take a look at a false early relationship, at the mistakes of young adulthood. Vocals are absolutely perfection as always, as Grand sings "the world's grown dark and colder, you're in law school, I'm a bar back in the neighborhood, so it's back to California in my mind".
The song is another strong country/pop release and the newly released music video continues Grand's impressive mission of changing the misconception of what a country artist should be. With scenes shared with with a younger Grand and his female companion, it is clear the boy is second guessing his relationship while undergoing inner troubles regarding his sexuality. However, with every Grand visual, there is a deeper, underlying message of a friendship that knows no boundaries as the two individuals speak even after his honest reveal.
"Back to California" continues to push Grand down the right route for mainstream exposure and success. The guy has amazing vocal and instrumental talents that deserve to be notice. "All-American Boy" was a huge viral hit, "Stay" is another country/pop delight, but his third single is showcasing a moodier, somber side to an artist who just enjoys making music. There is crossover potential here for Grand. Would not be surprised to run across this piece playing on the radio very soon. Watch the touching video below.
UPDATE: Grand got a bit emotional while thanking his fans for their love and support during the last two hours of his Kickstarter campaign. Expect All-American Boy this summer!
