Simon Curtis' "8Bit Heart"

Though many people may not know his name at the moment, that is sure to change for Simon Curtis after the release of his 2010 debut album, "8Bit Heart". Without a record label, Curtis wrote all the lyrics and did all the production for this album all on his own. What Curtis has created is an album that brings a breath of fresh air into the pop industry. With references to Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga, Curtis has put out an album that rivals all three of those ladies. Another reason that this album is amazing is the fact that he released it for free downloading on March 23rd on his website: www.simon-curtis.com.
With an opening that introduces Curtis to the world as a "boy robot", it is what to expect from this album. Greatly engineered pop songs that do not bore or do something that has already been done is what this album is all about. Track after track is filled with electro beats and great hooks that will have anybody singing and dancing along. The standout tracks on the album are the incredible "Diablo", "Beat Drop", and "Super Psycho Love". Even though these are the tracks that contain the pop idol references, Curtis makes these songs differ form anything the ladies are releasing. The tracks are amazingly produced with beats never heard before, but it is the vocals of Curtis that set this album apart. Curtis proves with many of the tracks on the album that he is someone that needs to be taking seriously, amazing vocals are found throughout. While most of the songs, "Don't Wanna Be Alone", "Fell in Love w/ an Android", and "8Bit Heart", deal with issues of love and losing the one you care for the most, a listener would not grow tired of the issue due to the fact that Curtis brings it across in a whole new way with so much emotion. Curtis also brings in his scandalous side with the gaming world inspired "Joystick". The track is a fun song that will have people feeling dirty just for listening which is never a bad thing. Bringing a successful album to a close are the tracks "Delusional", "Brainwash", and "The Dark feat. Jay-Z". Even though these three tracks are as different from each other as they possibly could be, they still sound amazing together on the tracklist and bring the album to a good close. Each track is a type of pop song that has not been heard before. The tracks come together to create a theme and that theme stays throughout from beginning to end and allows it to become a fun and enjoyable experience for the listener.
With this great album, I can only imagine what Curtis could accomplish if he had a major record label supporting him. My only problem with the album is the intro, interlude, and concluding tracks that are included. Not every album needs these useless tracks and I wish Curtis would have replaced them with more songs. Besides that, Curtis really delivers a spectaular debut album for any pop lover, or any music lover for that matter. One would be able to tell right away that so much heart and time was put into the making of the album. Every songs is catchy, modern, but never does it come off as cheap. The album receives a 90%, hopefully next time he will create an album filled with actual songs. I am looking forward to his next piece of work and wishing for his success.
