Belmont COA news - News - Wicked Local Belmont Posted: 22 Jan 2020 02:23 PM PST The Belmont Council on Aging is located at 266 Beech St. Announcements Volunteer Driver Program looking for volunteers: Is one of your New Year's resolutions to find ways to contribute and "give back" to the community? Our newly established Volunteer Driver Program is always looking to recruit new volunteers who are willing to drive seniors to medical appointments, social engagements, errands, meetings, etc. Did you know that the Council on Aging Transportation Department provides approximately 750 rides a month to individuals? Even with that robust number of rides offered, we are still not able to accommodate anywhere near the number of requests that we receive for transportation from our seniors. Transportation is a link to independence, quality of life, and social interaction. Older adults who no longer drive are vulnerable to social isolation and depression. For medical reasons, some seniors are temporarily unable to drive. The availability of affordable and accessible transportation is frequently identified as a gap for older adults. The Belmont Council on Aging Volunteer Driver Program is designed to help Belmont seniors remain interactive with their community. Volunteers have no minimum time commitment; you drive when your schedule allows! If you are compassionate, caring, and committed to making a difference in someone's life, then we want to talk with you. Contact Marty Cloherty at 617-993-2989 or mcloherty@belmont-ma.gov to learn more. January programs Filmed in Boston Movie Series with Professor Barry Marshall: 1:15 p.m. Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and 7. Starting with Mystery Street in 1950, Hollywood studios and independent producers have found Boston to be a fascinating city to shoot films. The city is steeped in history, has strong ethnic neighborhoods, and has many thousands of college students. The city has generated a myriad of homegrown stories that become memorable plots for films. It also has, in more recent years, become even more attractive to filmmakers due to the state and city tax incentives. We will watch some of the classic films made here, and discuss how the process of filming here adds so much flavor to these great films. In this series, participants will watch The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Verdict (1982), and The Departed (2006). Cost: $5 for the series. Barry Marshall is a Senior Affiliated Faculty member in the Visual and Media Arts Department at Emerson College, teaching classes in Film and Media History as well as Copyright.
